Caisson Guide – Cleaning, Inspection and Centraliser Installation

Tool Tec were approached in 2020 by a key client to carry out the installation of new centralisers into two of their caisson guide funnels to support both a 42" and 20" diameter caisson. From previous ROV survey footage it was clear that the original secondary retro fitted centralisers had failed and were no longer providing any support. However, some of the supporting structure and locating bolts were still in place, potentially causing issues for the installation of the new centralisers.

With the use of Tool Tec’s 36" Cleaning and Inspection Tool fitted with our new extended reach manipulator module, the tool was deployed down an adjacent conductor to complete an initial clean of both caisson guides and funnels using the manipulator held cleaning flail and HP water jetting cleaning tools. Once the area was thoroughly cleaned, the manipulator was armed with a laser measuring tool to carry out a survey of the area. The data from this survey was compiled into a formal report providing the precise location of the caissons within their guides and any obstacles present.

Tool Tec’s engineering team were then able to use this data to design and manufacture a bespoke shim solution for use within both guide funnels. A trial fit using a mock-up guide funnel was carried out onshore prior to Tool Tec equipment

and offshore technicians being mobilised to install each of the seven shims using the manipulator module fitted to the

36" Cleaning and Inspection Tool.

Finally, an as-left survey was carried out using a combination of the 36" Tools onboard camera systems and Tool Tec’s mini-ROV system as a

final check prior to demobilisation

of personnel and equipment.
